Nemus Explores Bio-Based Tire Material Production Plant in Kotka
A practical step toward more sustainable tire materials
The tire industry is gradually moving toward materials that rely less on fossil resources. While research has progressed, large-scale production remains a challenge. Nemus Materials Oy is now taking a step in that direction. The company is conducting preliminary project development to assess the construction of a production facility for a new type of bio‑based material in Mussalo, Kotka. The aim is to support the use of renewable, environmentally friendly raw materials in the tire industry.
A material designed to reduce fossil-based inputs
The new functional biomaterial is designed to replace fossil-based raw materials used in tires, such as carbon black. This can help reduce the carbon footprint of tires and increase the share of renewable and biodegradable materials in tire structures. The material produced from microfibrillated cellulose and natural rubber is intended to replace synthetic components in tire construction, supporting the transition toward more sustainable materials.
Built with industrial use in mind
One of the main challenges in introducing new materials to the tire industry is not the concept itself, but whether it can be used in existing production environments. The Nemus material is being developed with this in mind. It is intended to work within current manufacturing processes rather than requiring major changes to equipment or factory layouts. This practical approach is essential if new materials are to move beyond small-scale trials.
Location and development progress
Nemus Materials, part of the Black Donuts Group, has been researching natural materials for the tire industry over a longer period. The company expects growing demand for the Nemus materials in the international tire market. The Mussalo industrial area in Kotka has been selected as a potential location due to its supporting infrastructure available in the region.
Nemus Materials Oy and the City of Kotka have signed a preliminary agreement for leasing a property in Mussalo for the potential production facility. This agreement allows the project to move forward into more detailed planning and permitting processes to proceed.
Nemus Materials Oy is responsible for project development and permitting related to the planned production plant. The project is currently in the planning and permitting phase. A possible investment decision will be made at a later stage.
